If i get married in india will it be recognized in america?

Okay so my fiance who is from india tells me that were going to have a social wedding. which isnt a legal wedding i guess. which means were not going thru the courts. so it wont be a registered wedding i guess. is that even possible. is there such thing as a fake wedding? or well u can say that we do want to get married but in order for us to be together we have to be married. and i guess were putting on a show for his mom. we DO want to get married just not right now. is this even possible. i need some out side opinnion.
