What can cause a slight red blood count to be low?

My husband just had his yearly physical. His red blood count was slightly Low, and they found trace amount of blood in his urine. He is over wise healthy. He is tired all the time,which can be explained by lack of sleep. He doesn;t have a urinary track infection, or kidney stones. He just had a colonoscopy in December, and all was fine.
