Why do people resort to self destruction as a...?

way to cope with a past or present crisis in their lives? I'm watching intervention and these ppl just resort to drugs as a solution to their problems, whether it be an emotional or physical defect resulting from abuse etc. I was abused by my father and I have never done drugs or drink. I don't use sex or any other "vices" to deal witg what's. been done to me. is it bc I have God? I was saved at the age of 13 and even though I'm not perfect I just feel like that's the reason why I'm not like that. I don't even go to parties ir anything. those things just aren't my style. idk maybe I'm just weird.
