What's the name of this movie?

I watched a movie, it might be early 90's. It's about a family that deals with there alcoholic mother, I believe it might be set to seem as they were Indians(not the ones from India) living a American society. The mother is an alcoholic, and she has 2 teenage daughters and a younger son. One of the daughters is dating an African American boy, and thee other daughter deals with self esteem issues. I believe in one scene a mob of girls go to her home to try to jump her, and she kind of goes crazy and puts on too much make up then goes outside with a knife. Please help!
